Building a better future for families in need in Australia
Leading Australian developer and builder, Coronation Property Group (‘Coronation’) has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Australia to transform a dilapidated, vacant house in St Peter’s into temporary accommodation for two families in need.
The refurbishment is a joint effort between Coronation and Habitat for Humanity Australia’s Habitat Women Program – a 12-week training initiative which empowers women to enter the construction and maintenance industries. Through this program, participants gain hands-on skills in construction, boosting both their confidence and employability.
A team of more than 10 women are working together with Coronation’s building arm MN Builders on the vacant house which has been dis-used for two years. The women are using their skills to refurbish the house, transforming it into meanwhile use transitional accommodation for low-income women in need.
Managed by Habitat for Humanity Australia, the refurbished property will provide a safe haven for two single Mothers and their children, who are currently being supported by the Aboriginal Women & Children’s Crisis Service (AWCCS). To date, there have been numerous challenges finding suitable accommodation for the women and their children.
Habitat for Humanity Australia’s Head of Australian Programs, Queenie Tran has welcomed this initiative as a transformational opportunity for women in the program. Women enter our Program to build their skills and confidence to participate in this male dominated industry. Many of the women in our Program have experienced barriers to employment and are now on a pathway towards a job, safety, economic independence and freedom. To be employed in our Habitat Women crews, utilising their skills to support our community has been incredibly rewarding.
“Partnering with Coronation is providing our Habitat Women trainees and crew the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ experience in the construction and maintenance industry, with a fantastic outcome – giving two at risk families a home for Christmas,” she said.
Charlotte Dillon, Head of Philathropy & Social Impact at Coronation Property said that this project not only provides much-needed emergency housing in the middle of a chronic housing shortage but also offers an opportunity to provide ‘on the job’ training for a number of women who have faced barriers to entering the construction workforce.
“As a large-scale developer, we’re committed to increasing the provision of housing for women and supporting greater participation of women in the NSW construction industry. We will continue to strive for a higher proportion of women in the construction and maintenance sectors because we know stable, meaningful employment is crucial for achieving independence and economic security,” Ms Dillon said.
Works on the house we’re completed by 13 December, with the families moving-in by Christmas.
