World Water Day 2025:
Addressing the Global Water Crisis with Habitat for Humanity Australia

World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, is a reminder of the importance of safe water and the urgent need to tackle the global water crisis. With over 2.2 billion people around the world still living without access to safe water, World Water Day raises awareness about the significance of clean water and its essential role in human life. The theme of this global observance aligns with our Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which calls for water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Water is vital, not just for drinking, but also for sanitation, hygiene, agriculture, and economic development. In many parts of the world, the lack of access to clean water affects every aspect of life, from health to education, and perpetuates cycles of poverty. For people without reliable water sources, daily life becomes a struggle. In regions with scarce resources, women and children often bear the burden of long, dangerous journeys to collect water, reducing their opportunities for education and employment.

Habitat for Humanity Australia’s Commitment to Water Access

At Habitat for Humanity Australia, we believe that clean water is a basic human right and that access to safe, reliable water is crucial for building healthier communities. As part of our mission to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing, we also work to improve water access and sanitation in vulnerable communities.

WASH Program

Our WASH program – water, sanitation, and hygiene implemented in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, Nepal, and Vietnam supports communities to access improved water and sanitation. This includes the construction of new or improved water supply facilities such as wells, water tanks, and water treatment systems, as well as sanitation facilities such as drainage, toilets, and bathing/hand-washing facilities.

The WASH community workshops have equipped local committees with the knowledge, skills and tools to conduct water audits of their community water supply system, including risk assessments and water testing. The information they collect is then used to develop water improvement plans.

Together, We Can Tackle the Water Crisis

On World Water Day, we hope to remind the world that access to safe water should not be a luxury, but a basic right for every individual. As we work toward ensuring water and sanitation for all, Habitat for Humanity Australia remains committed to improving lives by providing safe housing and access to clean water.
