Sophorn is a 37-year-old mom to two young boys living in a small village in Cambodia. Sophorn and her husband Roeum like many parents found themselves in a difficult situation leading Roeum to migrate to Thailand for work a few years ago. Sophorn use to be able to earn up to $200 a month to provide for her family however now with Roeum working abroad she is now having to manage being a full-time parent on her own.
Sophorn lives in a small old house with walls covered with old zincs. During storms and bad weather conditions, their home was not safe or secure with the elements coming through the roof and walls.
Through our international program, Sophorn was able to partner with Habitat for Humanity Cambodia. Sophorn and her family were selected for a construction upgrade on their home and to receive livelihood training to support Sophorn to improve a family development plan.
“Our house has been improved a lot. It can stand with the strong winds and heavy rain. We all feel safer now.”–said Sophorn.
Sophorn’s shares how her livelihood training from Habitat Cambodia has given her a hand-up thus far:
“I have prepared my home garden and raised 25 chickens with the micro-grant support I received. I can now earn about US$100 from selling at least 9 chickens with some vegetables. With whatever is left over I kept to lay eggs for the new chick. I now have a bigger plan to raise more chickens with the savings from my income. I strongly believe that soon my family will be in a better place, and I can support my children to go to school properly. I hope Habitat Cambodia will continue to support the other vulnerable family to have a better life,” said Sophorn.
This project receives support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and is in partnership with our implementing partner Habitat for Humanity Cambodia who has been supporting local families to access safe shelter through our home-building program.
Every donation made to Habitat for Humanity Australia for this project is combined with funding from the Australian Government to reach more people. Since we have committed to contribute at least $1 for every $5 we receive from the Australian government, ANSA home’s support allows us to extend our programs and impact the lives of more people.
