Meet Andrew

Meet Andrew from Kellyville, NSW. He gave up a week of his time last year to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity for Rock the House. This year, he will be returning to Yogyakarta to help build another 12 homes – and is bringing along his wife and two friends for the journey

Why did you start volunteering with Habitat?

I do a lot of woodwork myself and have always wanted to give back and volunteer. When Rock the House came about I decided to just go for it!

Can you describe the experience in one or two sentences?

Being able to put my experience to good use was very rewarding, and I will forever know that I have made a difference to someone who needed it.

Tell us a bit about what the week involves?

Getting stuck in, no matter what your skill level, and working with your team mates and the families each day. Over the course of the week you can watch the progress of the house come together which helps keeps you motivated to finish what you started.

What was your favourite part of the week?

Working along side the local construction team and being able to learn some more traditional methods of building. I think we learned a little off of each other and I look forward to return in 2017 now I have this experience.

Why should others get involved in Rock The House?

It’s hard to describe but what you think you will get out of it is exactly how it feels at the end of the week and much more. This is why I am returning in 2017 and bringing my wife and two close friends with me.
