Disaster resilient communities in Quang Nam

Quang Nam, located in Central Vietnam is an extremely disaster prone area. Many families live in substandard homes and when storms hit, entire communities are destroyed.

Our Disaster Resilient Communities project focuses on building capacity so community members can better prepare for and mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Our work in Quang Nam is supported by international building and construction materials company, Boral – our Building Disaster Resilience program partner.

By facilitating community based training on risk management and construction technologies, we are helping to build stronger, safer communities and save more lives when natural disasters occur.

As part of our project, we facilitated two disaster response simulations at the end of last year in a flood prone area. 269 community members and local authorities attended.

The disaster simulation trained community members on home reinforcement and safe relocation. The participants learned the importance of disaster preparedness and what to do in the event of a disaster. As extreme weather conditions are common in Quang Nam, training like this is vital in ensuring communities are better prepared when disaster strikes and can plan ahead.
