Being chosen as a Habitat for Humanity partner family has “changed our lives forever”.

Habitat for Humanity South Australia recently held a dedication ceremony where they handed over a new home to Karen, a single mum of eight year old Kosta. In mid-2014 Karen and Kosta started their Habitat journey to make a fresh start in a home of their own.

Our home partners complete a sweat equity component of our home partner program, Karen along with her siblings and cousin learnt new skills by helping build the home. Karen felt empowered and gained a sense of achievement by being hands on. Her family have been “extremely supportive” throughout the build.

Many keen volunteers and supporters also helped make Karen’s home possible. Hardworking students, community volunteers and corporate groups from NAB, USG Boral and Kain Foundation assisted with the construction of their home.

At the home dedication ceremony, Karen shared how excited she was that they are in their own home. Kosta is looking forward to putting up his Star Wars posters on his bedroom wall. Karen said that being chosen to be a Habitat for Humanity partner family has “changed our lives forever”.

Since engaging with Habitat, Karen has also found employment. She is working part time as a delivery driver. Well done Karen, we wish you and Kosta the very best in your new home!
