In Battambang town, 40 year old Im, a husband and father of three, became disabled after a traffic accident and got his hand cut off and injured his leg. His two boys had to drop out of school to become the breadwinners, bringing merely $200 per month. This resulted in the family having to get a $5000 loan to provide treatment for Im, whose injuries were too painful to keep up with.
In debt and already struggling to keep up with the bills, the family was forced to move into Im’s mother in law’s house, who was already housing two other families.The family of 5 shared a single room (size 2mx3m) and had only one bed for all. The lack of space and resources, including food and water, was having a heavy impact on the family’s overall wellbeing.
Nonetheless, a local authority raised awareness to the family’s situation, and in March 2022 Habitat Cambodia built them a proper home that shelters them from rain and wind and with enough space for everyone to be comfortable.
Im’s wife said, “It was a dream come true for me after I saw this house. I am very excited because I have my own home. Before, I felt so terrible that I needed to share a room with other families.” A new home not only improved their physical lifestyle but also gave them mental tranquillity and hope for a better future.
