our work in Australia

Together, we build homegrown change

Habitat for Humanity Australia combines housing development with social impact, delivering tailored solutions to local communities. As a Tier 3 Community Housing Provider, Habitat increases access to secure and affordable housing for the most vulnerable, including women and children escaping domestic violence.

We provide shelter solutions

We do this through building and repairing shelters, disaster risk reduction and recovery, a housing rental initiative, maintenance training for women, ReStore shops and volunteering programs. We currently operate in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

our Australian programs

Our work provides access to safe, dignified housing—delivering repairs, renovations, and new homes that build strength, stability, and hope. We transform empty housing stock into homes for families, train women to lead in housing maintenance, advocated for systemic housing change, and made sustainable shopping part of the solution.

Volunteers play a vital role, with over 12,000 people contributing support our work over the past 10 years. Together, we have supported thousands of people across NSW, QLD, SA, and VIC, creating lasting impact in communities nationwide.

Renovate shelters

We help disadvantaged people through the Brush with Kindness corporate volunteering program. The program mobilises teams of volunteers to conduct landscaping, renovation and minor building repairs at the accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence or people experiencing homelessness. Teams can get out of the office and get their hands dirty! Through our Australian programs, we have helped over 1000 people through volunteering activities and engaged with more than 10,000 volunteers from both the community and corporate sectors.

CONSTRUCTING NEW HOUSING FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE

In New South Wales Habitat partners with specialist housing providers to construct new domestic violence refuges and other specialist housing. Our Home Ownership program is a limited application-based program that is only available in South Australia and Victoria. Our partner families receive an interest-free loan, based on the market value of the completed home and contribute 500 hours of their own time in the planning and construction phases.

meanwhile use | INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR AFFORDABLE AND SECURE HOUSING

Habitat’s meanwhile use housing program repurposes under utilised properties into crisis or temporary housing solutions, creating safe shelter for those who need it most. Our subsidised rental program provides affordable secure rental housing for women and their children escaping violence.

our social enterprise

Habitat Restore | SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING THAT BUILDS HOMES

Habitat Australia ReStore is a social enterprise turning everyday purchases into powerful change. By accepting and reselling new and gently used items, ReStore generates vital funds to support Habitat’s mission of building safe, affordable housing for families in need. From furniture and homewares to building materials, every item sold helps create secure shelter and stronger communities.

Habitat Women | MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS FOR MORE LIVEABLE HOMES AND COMMUNITIES

Our Habitat Women Training Program provides the training and skills for graduates to form the Habitat Women Social Enterprise - a skilled crew woman who carry out a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks to improve the habitability of homes. Their work includes internal repairs, flyscreen and window fixes, lawn and garden care, flat pack installations, labour hire, contracted maintenance and projects.

The Habitat Women Social Enterprise works alongside our Brush with Kindness volunteers, who give up their time to paint and refurbish homes for people experiencing vulnerability, together ensuring that more people in Australia can live in safe, dignified spaces.
