The Sampson Flat bushfires raged from the 2 – 9 January in South Australia. The fires burnt through more than 12,500 hectares, destroying family homes and their treasured belongings.
Three months on, many are still coping with the stress of the fire’s impact on their lives, their homes and their communities.
Habitat South Australia has been mobilising teams of volunteers to assist with clean-up, repair and rebuilding efforts through the Brush with Kindness Program in the fire affected areas. The recovery program is now in its fourth week and has seen volunteers come from far and wide to give their time to help make a difference in the lives of South Australian families.

Recently we welcomed students from Birdwood High School and a volunteer team consisting of 50 employees from NAB to assist with recovery efforts. The teams have worked hard throughout the day, clearing and removing burnt trees and fencing.
Jon Gee, Member for Napier recently gave a speech to Parliament about the fires and Habitat’s role in the recovery process. He said that Habitat had personally met with families to assess their needs and “The community spirit shown during and since this disaster makes me very proud to be Australian.”
