This project receives support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and is in partnership with our implementing partner Habitat for Humanity Cambodia to provide access to housing and family development training.
A family of 7 living in a village in Battambang province, survives with no more than $250 per month. Father and mother Thorn (70) and Ny (53) take care of their 5 children: Oeurn (35), Malin (26), Sovanna (20), Sreynan (19), and Sovan (18). The youngest is disabled, giving Ny no option but to work close to home so she can take care of him as well.
Besides other necessities, Ny pointed out the need for a proper toilet after her family was recommended to the local authorities as a vulnerable family. They did not have any access to one, which meant that they had to defecate in open air, regardless of the weather, time, or possible dangers like snakes and insects.
In December of 2019, Habitat Cambodia built them a latrine that was safe to use at any time of the day, all due to the support of the “New start, New life” project. Along with this, Ny participated in a family development training, and received a grant to raise chickens, giving her an extra income to bring to the family.
“With the grant support, I have built a chicken’s cage and started with 10 chickens. Until now, I have earned around US$75 from selling chickens, and I have 20 more remaining. I will save some money from this to increase chicken raising. I strongly believe that soon I can earn more to support my family, and we will live in a better situation.” said Ny, who took the opportunity from Habitat and used it to the best of her advantage. Her determination, effort and love for her family will forever change their lives for the better.
