This week is National Homelessness Week. With more than 1600 people pushed into homelessness each week and more than 640,000 Australian households experiencing housing stress, there is a severe and ongoing crisis that needs to be addressed.
Today we wanted to share with you some of the Habitat projects that are providing invaluable support to our communities to help those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, domestic violence, or other crises across Australia.

Our Subsidised Housing and Rental Program

SHARP (Subsidised Housing and Rental Program): Habitat for Humanity Australia aims to become a landlord of choice for the vulnerable in our community who want a better future for their families through secure and affordable rental accommodation. Learn more about SHARP here.

Refurbishing Shelters across Australia

Through Brush with Kindness, Habitat partners with a variety of organisations like St Vincent de Paul, Wesley Mission, Rainbow Lodge and many more to refurbish and refresh transitional accommodation and refuges for those escaping domestic violence or in other vulnerable situations. We’re always after both individual and corporate volunteers so if you’d like to join us in making a difference head to our Helping Hands website here.

Building Shelters for Domestic Violence Survivors

Our construction program partners with specialist housing providers to design and construct housing solutions that are responsive to the needs of those they support. Current projects are focused on providing transitional accommodation for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.

We have recently completed a refuge in partnership with DV West in Western Sydney. The 9-bedroom, 4-unit refuge will provide shelter and wrap-around services for up to 80 Aboriginal women and children annually.

As National Homelessness Week comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the unwavering support and dedication of our volunteers, partners and donors. Their contributions and volunteer efforts are making a profound impact, helping us address the urgent needs of those facing homelessness and domestic violence across Australia. Through initiatives like SHARP, Brush with Kindness, and building shelters, we are working tirelessly to provide secure housing and vital support to vulnerable individuals and families. Your involvement is not just appreciated; it is essential to our mission. Together, we are creating safer, more stable futures for many.
