Tom is a writer and international aid worker. His first experience of humanitarian response was during the Pakistan earthquake in 2005 and he has subsequently worked in more than twenty countries with NGOs, Red Cross, and UN Agencies in emergency response to disaster and conflict as well as international development programs. His work has focussed on humanitarian shelter and settlements and aid coordination. He has written extensively on aid policy and practice. His recent book is The Rising Tide: among the islands and atolls of the Pacific Ocean.
