The Habitat Women program by Habitat for Humanity Australia is a pioneering initiative that supports women entering the construction industry, breaking down employment barriers, and fostering essential skills for meaningful careers. This program doesn’t just transform lives—it uplifts communities by aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), working towards a more inclusive and sustainable world.

How Habitat Women Creates Sustainable Impact

The program is founded on two key pillars: skills training and a social enterprise for repairs and maintenance. Together, these pillars empower women through practical experience and fulfilling employment while addressing the housing needs of vulnerable communities.

1. Skills Training: Building Competence and Confidence

Habitat Women offers hands-on training in essential construction skills, covering topics like basic carpentry, wall repairs and painting, and make safe of basic electrical and plumbing works and repairs through 12 workshop modules. The program also includes four career development modules on resume building, interview preparation, and workplace communication, with support through one-on-one coaching and mentorship from industry professionals. Experiences like a “Day in Boots” exposes participants to real-world construction jobs paired with hands-on experience , enhancing confidence and preparing them for sustainable employment.

2. Repairs and Maintenance Social Enterprise: Community-Centered Employment

Graduates can join Habitat Women’s social enterprise, working on maintenance projects that benefit those escaping Domestic and Family Violence, people receiving specialised supports and those at risk of homelessness. This enterprise improves living conditions across communities while providing affordable repair services, empowering women and enhancing community resilience.
