Every year, Habitat for Humanity Australia recognises the outstanding contributions of young individuals who demonstrate a profound commitment to volunteering. In 2024, we are thrilled to honour Zoe Kasinathan as our Young Volunteer of the Year. “I volunteered because I wanted to actively help people, not just talk about the strategies but to be a part of the solution.”- Zoe.

A First Step into Volunteering

At just 16 years old, Zoe Kasinathan embarked on her first Global Village build in Vietnam in April 2024, accompanied by her mother, Lena. Despite initial uncertainties about how she could contribute, Zoe quickly became an indispensable member of the team. Her enthusiasm and willingness to engage deeply with the partner family set her apart. From working on construction tasks to helping prepare snacks for the team, Zoe’s dedication was evident in every aspect of the project.

Reflecting on the experience, Lena shared how the build profoundly impacted Zoe. “She’s grown more confident. She’s now willing to step out of her comfort zone a lot more. Visiting a previous partner family especially made an impact on her. She also feels very lucky to have had the education she has back home. It’s really good for her to have an adjustable worldview.”

Building Confidence and Connections

Throughout the week-long build, Zoe’s confidence grew, and she developed a strong connection with the partner family. The experience not only deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by others but also reinforced her belief in her ability to make a difference.

Lena added, “I’m hoping that she’ll be motivated to make a change and continue to help others. She now knows that she can be part of the solution for issues like poverty and climate change. This experience has given her the agency to contribute and bring those learnings back home.”

A Voice for Change

Zoe’s journey has inspired her to share her story with others. She volunteered to be featured in Habitat for Humanity Australia’s communications to promote the Global Village program to other young people. Her willingness to step forward as an advocate highlights her commitment to encouraging others to engage in meaningful service.

Why Zoe Kasinathan Volunteers

Zoe’s passion for volunteering stems from a desire to create real, tangible change. For her, the experience was not just about building a home but also about building relationships and fostering a sense of gratitude and responsibility. By stepping out of her comfort zone, Zoe has set an example for other young people to follow—showing that age is no barrier to making a difference.

A Bright Future Ahead

The Young Volunteer of the Year Award recognises young individuals who go above and beyond in their commitment to Habitat for Humanity Australia. Zoe Kasinathan’s efforts—from her hands-on contributions during the build to her role as an advocate for change—demonstrate her remarkable dedication to creating a better world.

Congratulations, Zoe Kasinathan, on being named Habitat for Humanity Australia’s Young Volunteer of the Year 2024. Your story reminds us all of the power of youth, hope, and determination to make a lasting impact.
