Housing Security

Home > What we do > Overseas > Housing Security

Rapid urbanisation and the high cost of land and building materials means low-income families often lack the resources to build safe homes.

Housing security

As a result, many live in inadequate housing, characterised by a lack of access to basic services and utilities such as water, sanitation and electricity. Insecure land tenure, the threat of forced eviction, overcrowding and building inadequacies such as lack of light, ventilation and durability, are also common features of substandard housing.

Providing access to safe and decent housing is a pivotal part of Habitat for Humanity Australia’s work. Rebuilding and repairing inadequate housing provides families with the opportunities they need to overcome the circumstances that allow poverty to fester.

A home is a stabilising force for a family and is truly transformative when it comes to health, education, opportunity and economic security. For around AUD$3,000, we can build a house for an entire family in the Asia Pacific.

With the help of Habitat for Humanity, Morn has been able to build a safe, new home, where she and her daughter can live together without the worry of how to pay for next month’s rent.
