In June I’ll be leading my 7th build and to be honest with you, they get better and better every time.
Each one is unique, not only because they’re in different locations, but because of the volunteers around me, and of course the partner family and local community.
I remember being nervous the first time I led a build, in the south of Vietnam in 2017. As a new Habitat staff member it was a big responsibility to coordinate 14 volunteers, most of them who didn’t know each other. Not to mention the fact that we were going to change a family’s life FOREVER just 6 days later.
But after 5 minutes of the welcome dinner the group were laughing and chatting like old friends. It always amazes me how quickly a team of strangers can get along, united by a common purpose.
Since then I’ve shared some amazing experiences in Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia and Cambodia with family and friends, both old and new. Many volunteers have become close friends and we jokingly argue about who is following who around the world as we build homes each year in another country.
The next adventure is in the north of Vietnam in June in a city called Thai Nguyen. It’s less than an hours drive from Hanoi and a couple of hours west of tourist hot spot, Halong Bay.
Over a week we’ll be building a home with a vulnerable family, alongside the local community in beautiful rural, green surroundings (do a google image search, it looks amazing!)
We won’t be slumming it, as the hotel is in the city where you can find museums, fountains, restaurants and ‘coffee street’ with over 20 cafes where you can sample Vietnamese coffee at its best. The day before the build the team will spend some time getting to know each other on an activity. While most builds feature a temple or museum visit, I’m more on the adventurous side so usually opt for something like white water rafting, caving, mountain biking or riding a bamboo train. All safe of course, with options for all fitness levels and ages.
I’d love to have a chat with as many of you as possible, and hopefully recruit enough volunteers to build more than one home, to make an impact on the lives of more than one family.
If you’ve never done a build before but have always wanted to, I can talk you through the itinerary and how it will change a family’s life, and your own while you’re at it.
For those amazing enough to have built with us before, I’d love to chat to you about how this one will be different.
Call me anytime on (02) 9919 7025 or 0423 099 103 or reply to this email with questions.
Hope to see you on the build site…and by the hotel pool, soon!
