Join the Tiger Build and you’ll spend one week building a new home for a family in need. Working alongside the family and the wider community, you’ll complete tasks such as laying cement blocks, mixing cement, rendering, and building an outdoor toilet. As you get your hands dirty and see the house take shape around you, you’ll see the impact that your hard work has made and feel a great sense of pride as a result.
You’ll be building in beautiful Krabi. Situated on the coast of the Andaman sea in Southern Thailand, this is a popular tourist destination. People are drawn to Krabi for its sandy beaches, crystal clear water, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls, and over 130 islands, including Koh Lanta and the jewels of the Andaman coast, the six islands of Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park. Krabi Town is a charming provincial capital located along the banks of a river. Consequently, Krabi is an important port city for both local fisherman as well as boats ferrying visitors to the nearby attractions, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Railey Beach, one of the best rock climbing destinations in the world.
Despite Thailand having a strong and growing tourist sector there is still a large percentage of the population living below the national poverty line. The increasing shift of families moving from the rural areas into urban centers in search of work has put a strain on the housings sector in all cities. Those that move to the cities are forced to pay high rent for small and overcrowded houses. Many of them have to piece together makeshift shelters using scraps of wood, rusted scrap metal, canvas, cardboard or leaves stretched between wire mesh. Other families crowd in with relatives, or hide a bed in the same space where they sell their goods. Families have no secure space for their children to do their homework, they do not have access to safe shelter and are often at risk of disease as a result of poor sanitation.
Habitat for Humanity aims to improve the quality of lives in Krabi through building homes, communities, and hope. Habitat for Humanity works with like-minded partners, focusing on holistic development and sustainable change to achieve a positive and lasting impact. By providing decent homes, Habitat for Humanity boosts a family’s economic and educational opportunities, improves health and social integration. According to the needs of the families and communities, Habitat for Humanity and its partners will facilitate job training, encourage home-based businesses, set up health centres, community centres and libraries, among others.
