Spend your week immersing yourself in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia that boasts an incredible mix of old world charm and modern lifestyles, and build a home for a family in the community. Along with a team of like-minded volunteers, you can provide a family with the long-term shelter and security they need for their future. Whilst in Surabaya, soak in the sights through old Surabaya, as well as exploring traditional street markets, temples and Dutch colonial-style houses.
Use your Habitat build as the jumping off point for an exploration of Indonesia, an archipelago that is comprised of some 17,000 islands and home to over three hundred ethnic and religious groups.
Surabaya is the second largest urban center in Indonesia after Jakarta. One of the slum areas in Surabaya city is located in Tegal Sari Sub District, Kedungdoro Village (Kelurahan). Kedungdoro is a high density area and is disorderly with poor environmental planning. One of the causes is natural growing population and uncontrolled urbanization results. The project envisions improving the housing condition of 600 families, improving health and hygiene infrastructure such as water and sanitation, solid and liquid waste management, drainage system, and support for income generation alternatives to ensure capacity and timely repayments.
Growing urbanisation means that access to housing will become a major challenge for Indonesia in the coming years. The current housing backlog in Indonesia is estimated at 6 million houses and is projected to rise by 1 million houses every year, with an additional 15 million classed as sub-standard.
Habitat, through a participatory approach, actively engages the community, its leaders, and local government in every aspect of the project from design to implementation, in order to ensure quality and sustainability. The impact of this home will be far reaching and will create a rock solid future for a family in need. Having a healthy home, with cement floors, improved ventilation, clean water and sanitation facilities will have immediate health benefits. The family will also receive skills training and with a home to call their own, they have a place to start a business and earn a steady income.
