Take a trip to India and see firsthand how your hard work can change lives. Habitat for Humanity Australia is running its second Holi Build in Pondicherry in November. This is your chance to experience an incredible culture and to help others at the same time.
First, you can enjoy this country so full of colour and life, and revel in all that India has to offer. Chaotic, fun and incredibly unique, any trip to India is a truly unforgettable experience. Then, you’ll spend a week building a new home for a local family, giving them long-term shelter and security for the future, as well as making friends with the teammates you’ll be working with. This is a truly rewarding way to see the world, make lasting friendships and give a family the gift of a new home.
This Global Village build is the perfect opportunity to explore the amazing country of India. Take time to travel around the subcontinent and before or after your time volunteering with us. The build could be just the beginning of your Indian adventure!
In a desperately poor country where almost half the population earns less than $1 per day, Indian women are doubly oppressed and disadvantaged. Tradition and patriarchy subject women to a life of servitude to fathers, husbands and sons. The project in Pondicherry aims to strengthen female headed households who struggle to meet even their most basic needs.
Women in these households are frequently denied access to and control over land, limiting their chances of ever owning a decent home. Their current housing conditions are extremely poor, consisting of rudimentary huts with no toilet facilities. The houses are cramped and small and provide no security and protection leaving families vulnerable to illness and theft. Children from these households are especially vulnerable to disease and exploitation and are likely to forego educational opportunities due to the need to contribute to the family income.
Through a holistic and integrated approach, supporting Indian families to save for, and build their own homes, alongside community capacity building and training, this project has successfully helped female headed households create secure and healthy living environments for their children. It has empowered families, strengthening their capacity to protect and care for their children, and strengthened safety nets for vulnerable children and their families within the community.
