Spend your week immersing yourself in the city of Yogyakarta, the cultural centre of Java, and build a home for a family in the community of Selopamioro. Along with a team of like-minded volunteers, you can provide a family with the long-term shelter and security they need for their future. Whilst in Yogyakarta soak in the sights with visits to the awe-inspiring Borobodur Temple as well as exploring Jalan Malioboro, Yogyakarta’s traditional street markets.
Use your Habitat build as the jumping off point for an exploration of Indonesia, an archipelago that is comprised of some 17,000 islands and home to over three hundred ethnic and religious groups.
Your team will help Habitat for Humanity make a life changing impact in the community of Selopamioro. Indonesia is home to 245 million people, making it the fourth largest country in the world. Such a vast and diverse population makes for a cultural richness, but also presents some obstacles. The spread of development in Indonesia has been uneven, and there remain vulnerable groups of people living in poverty.
Growing urbanisation means that access to housing will become a major challenge for Indonesia in the coming years. The current housing backlog in Indonesia is estimated at 6 million houses and is projected to rise by 1 million houses every year, with an additional 15 million classed as sub-standard.
Habitat, through a participatory approach, actively engages the community, its leaders, and local government in every aspect of the project from design to implementation, in order to ensure quality and sustainability. The impact of this home will be far reaching and will create a rock solid future for a family in need. Having a healthy home, with cement floors, improved ventilation, clean water and sanitation facilities will have immediate health benefits. The family will also receive skills training and with a home to call their own, they have a place to start a business and earn a steady income.
