The Angkor Adventure build is your opportunity to see the world and help others at the same time. In just one week you’ll construct a new home for a family in need. You’ll work hard, make new friends, gain insights into a new culture and feel a great sense of pride at what you’ve achieved.
Make the most of your trip by immersing yourself in the local culture. Try the great local food and walk through the diverse markets. When the build is complete why not reward yourself for all your hard work by taking some time to explore the breathtaking temples of Angkor Wat, take a boat ride through the floating villages of Tonle Sap or get up close to an elephant. A Habitat build could be the very beginning of your Cambodian adventure!
Your team will be working on a house constructed as part of the Building Better Lives Project in Siem Reap. This two year project will help vulnerable families and low income households in Siem Reap. We will provide housing shelter, water, sanitation and secure land tenure for these families. In turn, our local project partners will be providing counselling programs, medication or testing that may be required by the families.
It’s estimated that 8% of all children in Cambodia are orphans, and of these, 7,000 are living with HIV/AIDS. Many more children are at risk of becoming orphans as there is limited access to anti-retroviral drugs in order to treat their parents who have been infected by HIV/AIDS. Vulnerable groups such as people living with HIV/AIDS as well as the elderly in Cambodia not only suffer physical hardship, they are also subject to immense stigma, social marginalisation and economic hardship. The hardships these families face leave them vulnerable when faced with forced eviction, and are even more susceptible to illness and disease spread through overcrowding and lack of sanitation. All of these risks can easily destabilise people, disrupt treatment and reverse health gains.
Stable, safe and decent housing is a critical component to ease these hardships. Housing is a catalyst for poverty alleviation that cuts across almost every other indicator for human development. For vulnerable populations, access to safe housing will give them the opportunity to break from poverty and its consequences.
