Building strength, stability and self-reliance

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with communities across the Asia Pacific region to help families access housing solutions and support community development.

Our overseas work addresses the multi-dimensional aspects of poverty and recognises that safe and decent housing plays a key role in lifting families out of poverty.

Our approach is community based. We work with our partners and partner communities to deliver projects that are community-driven and participatory. This means, community members play an active role in identifying the needs and areas of focus of our work. We then work with community members to help them come up with solutions to address these needs and achieve sustainable development.

These areas of focus target housing needs at multiple stages of what is known as the Housing Value Chain. This includes water, sanitation and hygiene, disaster preparedness and land security to name a few.

Addressing needs at various stages of the housing value chain puts in motion changes that will improve quality of life and speed up construction of adequate housing.

Ultimately, we believe decent housing, and everything it affords, is something we all need to thrive, and by working together we can transform the lives of families in need to build:

strength

Strength:

A safe and decent home provides a family with a strong foundation on which they can build a brighter future. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability — and financial flexibility — to make forward-looking choices.

stability

Stability:

Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities. By providing access to safe shelter, as well as water and sanitation, financial literacy and livelihood training, we can create change for generations.

selfrialance

Self-reliance:

Through housing, we empower. A decent place to live helps families save more, invest in education, pursue greater opportunity and have more financial stability. We believe in providing a hand-up not a hand-out.
