What to Pack for your Global Village Build

Having trouble deciding what to pack for your upcoming Global Village build? We’re here to help! Here are some of our recommendations of what to bring with you and what to leave at home.

Before you start packing your bags, there are a few things to remember:

  • Safety is the most important thing on the build site, not fashion!
  • If your build clothes don’t get dirty, you’re not doing it right. Only bring clothes that you’re prepared to throw away.
  • Comfort is key. Your old sneakers will be far better for your feet than a new pair of work boots that will only give you blisters.
  • When you’re overseas, remember to be culturally sensitive and always dress modestly.

Appropriate clothing for the build site

  • Habitat for Humanity team polo shirt
  • Loose fitting t-shirts
  • Long sleeved shirts, such as a light collared style
  • Long, loose fitting pants in full or three-quarter length
  • Knee length shorts or longer
  • Light scarf to absorb perspiration
  • Sturdy sneakers (or work boots or hiking boots if you already own them – it is not necessary to purchase these specifically for the build)
  • Thick socks
  • Gumboots (if you are travelling in the wet season)

Personal health and safety equipment for the build site

  • Work gloves or gardening gloves (there will be gloves provided on site, but if you want extra protection, feel free to bring your own)
  • Sun screen
  • Sunglasses
  • Wide brimmed hat
  • Habitat for Humanity team cap

Clothing for around town and in your hotel

  • Modest tops and shirts
  • Long pants
  • Knee length shorts or longer
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Swimming costume (if your hotel has a pool)
  • Thongs/flip flops or sandals
  • Sarong or scarf

Other personal items

  • Power adapter
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal first aid kit (including electrolytes, cold and flu tablets, anti-inflammatory medication and gastro medication)
  • Toiletries
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Small disposable plastic bags
  • Money pouch
  • Tissues
  • Anti-bacterial wipes
  • A notebook
