October news and updates from South Australia

In South Australia, we have started construction on another new home and are continuing bushfire recovery efforts.

Meet our newest partner family

karen-kosta-saSay hello to Karen and her son Kosta who we are helping build a home in Davoren Park.

Karen works part time as a delivery driver to support her son. She has dreamed of home ownership for many years, but never thought it would become a reality. After hearing about home ownership opportunities with Habitat for Humanity, Karen attended an information session. Karen’s application to build a home with Habitat was accepted and she is thankful that her family have been given a hand up into home ownership.

We believe having a home to call your own provides a stable foundation in which to raise a family, secure employment, pursue education and develop social relationships. It is a key step in connecting with and feeling part of your local community.

Our staff and volunteers are working off site at our Habitat Shed constructing the timber frame for the home. Thanks to their hard work and commitment, the frame should start going up on the slab early next week.

Bushfire Recovery receives another boost

A grant from the Uniting Church of South Australia from their Disaster Relief Fund has given a boost to our recovery effort in the Sampson Flat bushfire area.

The work to date has benefited more than 40 local families, seven of who lost their homes in the devastating fires.
We have volunteer teams in the area on Monday and Wednesday each week and anticipate another 40-50 activity days. We envisage needing another 100 plus volunteers to sign up to help when they can.

Our thanks also goes to our wonderful volunteers for their continued commitment!
