Improving lives through training

Livelihood training plays an important role in our work overseas. It provides participants with valuable skills they can use to earn an income, and which they can share with others.

In Nepal, as part of our Ex-Kamaiya Community Development Project, we have held livelihood trainings on brick and candle making to help give households increased economic security.

Brick making
We held 25 brick making trainings for 118 individuals over November and December 2014 in Jhapa district. Participants were taught to make bricks from a mixture of clay, sand and water.

Hari, one of the participants said “The training has been very helpful. We will now be able to construct 20 toilets out of the bricks made and along with this we have developed skills that will help us to get better jobs in the future.”

Candle making
Due to increasing demand for electricity in Nepal, households can experience up to 12 hours of planned power cuts a day. The need for a safe, alternative source of lighting led people in Kanchanpur district to request for candle making training.

Candles are in high demand as they are safer to use than lanterns and firewood and are less expensive. 100 community members have participated in seven candle making training sessions. The candles are made using wax and thread, with different moulds used to shape the wax into proper candles.
