Giving back this National Volunteer Week

At Habitat, volunteers are our lifeblood. Without them our work would simply not be possible.

Today marks the start of National Volunteers Week (11-17 May), and we want to thank all our hard working volunteers, both individuals and corporates for their work over the years. Their passion and dedication has made a huge difference in the lives of the families we work with in Australian and overseas.

Around Australia, through our Brush with Kindness program our corporate supporters, including QBE, P&G, Arup, Origin and Telstra send teams of volunteers to spend a day giving back to the community. Volunteers have worked with families affected by bushfires, as well as community members who may be disadvantaged, disabled or socially isolated.

Just last week we welcomed a team of volunteers from QBE for a Brush with Kindness activity in the Blue Mountains. The team spent the day helping out Winamalee resident, Eileen. Habitat had previously conducted a Brush with Kindness activity at Eileen’s house after the October 2013 bushfires and helped remove debris from her garden.

The hard work of our volunteers made a big difference in helping the family in their recovery but since this, Eileen has been going through a tough time. Earlier this year her husband went into care due to Alzheimer’s, and sadly passed away last month.

Our volunteers showed great teamwork and helped clear Eileen’s garden. At our first Brush with Kindness it was difficult to establish which trees had died in the fires and whether they would bounce back. Now, a year and a half on, the team were able to lop branches and remove dead trees.

Eileen was very thankful for the team’s hard work and effort. Our volunteers were also grateful to given the chance to give back to the community.
